Interactive Against Fake News & Cyberbullying

The interactive scavenger hunt for Saferinternet.at is a standalone, web-based chat system that helps young people learn how to use various parts of the internet safely. The quiz poses questions, gives tasks, and guides users to various locations on the Saferinternet website or elsewhere on the web. Interaction works just like a chat app on a smartphone. A correct answer leads to the next task, while an incorrect answer provides hints. Due to its great success, the range of digital learning materials was expanded in 2025 with two more playful solutions: a swipe system and another chat system that educators can customize to help children recognize fake news.

The Challenge

The aim was to create the possibility of developing various simple quizzes in the form of chat simulations – as well as, in a further development, interactive games with swipe and touch functions. These simulations are primarily intended to encourage children to interact, thus educating them about the dangers of the internet in a playful way.

Our Solution

For these projects, we opted for a web app with a flexible backend solution that allows customers to independently create any number of quizzes and games. They have full control over the content – from the questions to the visual elements they wish to include. A user-friendly administration area, specifically designed for authorized Saferinternet users, is available in the background. Interactive scavenger hunts can be easily created, edited, and managed there. The area also provides access to an anonymized leaderboard that clearly displays progress and results. Teachers can create games for any number of classes and play them within each class, using their own leaderboards. Both the scavenger hunt and the games are generated automatically and can be easily shared via a link – whether by email, WhatsApp, or social media.

Saferinternet.at

“We wanted a tool that helps young people better recognize fakes online – and Bytewood made exactly that happen. Our ideas were understood and implemented without the need for many words.”

It was clear from the very beginning: In Bytewood, we found the right partner for our project. Our goal was to help children and young people learn how to handle misinformation online in a playful way – especially now, as deepfakes and disinformation are surging due to generative AI. With the web game 'FightFakes,' we aim to foster a gut feeling for truth and deception, since a classic fact-check is often unrealistic in everyday life. This made it all the more important for us to develop a tool that empowers young people rather than just restricting them. Bytewood took our ideas seriously, understood the requirements of the educational sector, and translated them into a solution that fits us perfectly – even without us having to provide technical specifications for everything. Communication was seamless, and the result speaks for itself.
